According to experts, underwater robots can be divided into manned underwater robots (HOV) and unmanned underwater robots. Among them, unmanned underwater vehicles are divided into two categories. "Explorer" untethered underwater robot is the first untethered autonomous underwater robot in China. The untethered explorer underwater vehicle has three computers on the surface, namely the master control computer, the positioning computer and the image recovery computer. The main control computer provides the remote control operation interface of the carrier system, the programming interface of the autonomous route and the monitoring interface of the carrier system status, realizing human-machine interaction, and obtaining the GPS global positioning system data to calculate the position of the mother ship, so that the carrier's track in the geographic coordinate system can be depicted in the chart. The image recovery computer processes and restores the compressed television signal sent by the master computer.
 
In retrospect, the development of underwater robots in China began in the 1970s and 1980s. China's first underwater robot, hairen I, was developed by the shenyang institute of automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1986.
 
At present, China has established a "dragon family" of ocean exploration, represented by jiaolong manned submersible, hailong unmanned and untethered submersible and qianlong I unmanned and untethered submersible.
